THE heat was on for 16 gutsy ladies who competed among themselves to qualify for the finals during the Jumbo Queen 2011 semi finals recently.
Out of the 16 contestants only 10 were chosen to proceed to the finals, which will take place on Nov 1.
The semi finals were staged in two parts – the self introduction, and the group formation which had the contestants in groups dancing in sporty attire.
The lucky 10 were Kelly Ong Kay Li (95kg) aged 26 years, Purnisha (112kg) aged 31, Winnie Goh Yea Min (117kg) aged 29, Nor Intah Julyana aka Pretty Diamond (100kg) aged 33, Honey Chan Ang Li (89kg) aged 22, Yoong Swen Moon (94kg) aged 21, Sharon Lim Su Ling (120kg) aged 23, Irene Wee (85kg) aged 22, Azurah Ismail (120kg) aged 37 and Theresa Chin Tze Tze (104kg) aged 39.
The contestants were judged on their stage personality, confidence, crowd response, apparel and overall performance.
The heaviest contestant of all was Sharon Lim who weighed 120kg, while the lightest was Irene Wee who weighed 85kg.
The contestants came from various backgrounds such as beautician, admin manager, personal assistant, cashier, student, senior buyer and student.
The Jumbo Queen 2011, which is organised by Sungei Wang Plaza, attracted many participants from all over Malaysia.
This competition is open to all female Malaysians with a minimum weight of 80kg. This year’s event received about 100 registrations, but only 30 were chosen to participate after the strict interview session.
“Jumbo Queen 2011 provides a platform for large-size women to express their individuality, and be in the limelight and battle it on equal ground for the crown. The competition also boosts their confidence and enhances their great personality,” said Sungei Wang Plaza senior manager of promotions and public relations, K. K. Lim, in a statement.
Miss Jumbo Queen 2011 will walk away with the grand prize of RM5,000, Secolo Hairdressing voucher worth RM1,000, MOG Eyewear voucher worth RM1,000, a trophy and sash.
The first runner-up will bring home RM3,000, Secolo Hairdressing voucher worth RM700, MOG Eyewear voucher worth RM700, a trophy and sash, while the second runner-up will receive RM2,000 cash, Secolo Hairdressing voucher worth RM500, MOG Eyewear voucher worth RM400, a trophy and sash.
There will also be consolation prizes for various categories such as “Most Popular”, “Most Talented”, “Most Online Votes on Facebook”, “Mix FM Most Popular Choice Award” and “MY FM Most Popular Choice Award”. Winners of these categories will each be awarded with RM500, MOG Eyewear voucher worth RM300 and a trophy.
Theresa Chin was the oldest of them all at 39 years old.
