Thousands of hopeful girls applied to be in the running of Dewi Remaja 2010 which was eventually crowned to Noor Neelofa, a 21-year-old international trade and marketing student from Kelantan.
With an obvious flare for fashion and a forte at turning heads, the petite lady didn't expect to win the title, claiming that she joined on a whim.
"I already knew about Dewi Remaja since I was very little, but I never planned on joining the competition until my friends and family persuaded me to," she laughed.
Twelve finalists made it to the final showdown hosted at Dewan Tun Hussien Onn, PWTC recently. Wrapped in a green silk dress, Noor Neelofa sashayed her way on stage with a mischievous smile and bubbly personality set out to impress the judges and audience.
The show began with an upbeat dance routine performed by the 12 finalists and followed by a short introductory speech from each contestant. Though some of the girls had trouble memorising their lines, Noor Neelofa gave a quick and casual greeting that brought the audience to laughter.
Panel of judges which included actor Azhar Sulaiman, former Dewi Remaja winner Annahita Bakavoli and singer-songwriter Edry KRU, were certainly impressed by Noor Neelofa's charm as she was picked to continue the battle along with four other girls.
The top five finalists, namely Noor Neelofa, Ixara, Sha, Ira and Ramona, had then advanced towards the only unrehearsed part of the show - the Q&Asession.
The girls' spontaneity was put to test when they were asked different but equally tough personality-related questions. Just like her introductory speech, Noor Neelofa's answer was short and precise, but witty and memorable.
Showered with silver confetti, Noor Neelofa was clearly shocked when her name was announced as the winner of Dewi Remaja 2010. "I didn't know what to feel. I was happy, nervous and surprised," she said.
"If I had to guess, I would have thought that either Ixara or Sha would win the title," added Noor Neelofa, who was crowned on stage by another former winner, Scha Al-Yahya. Just like the previous winners, Noor Neelofa has also achieved sudden stardom as she has already signed up as the lead character in an upcoming TV series Azura which will begin production this January.
Dewi Remaja 2010 is a televised event which airs on Astro Ria every Wednesday at 9.30pm.
