MIRI: Five beauty queens from Sabah and Sarawak will be joining some 700 people, mostly youths in Miri, in the ‘30-Hour Famine Camp’ which begins today at the Miri Indoor Stadium.

The beauty queens are led by Mirian Marlene Lim, who is the reigning Miss Chinese Western Australia 2010 and the advisor of the camp. The other beauties are Edwina Yong (Miss Sarawak Model of the World 2010), Janet Bennet (Miss Fair and Lovely 2009), Cynthia John (Miss Borneo Tourism 2010) and Wawa el-daimond (Unduk Ngadau Perpaduan or Miss Harvest Festival).

Lim told reporters this yesterday at the Miri Airport when receiving the beauties from Sabah and Kuching. Also present was Miri City mayor Lawrence Lai Yu Son.

“The youngest participant is a three year old while the oldest is my mother Lu Leh Hung, 51. The rest are mostly youths and students, including some from Brunei, Sandakan and Johor.

“Among our aims are to get the youths to be involved in charity work, to heighten their awareness about global social issues caused by poverty and its impact on children,” Lim stressed.

She added that through the camp they hoped to raise RM10,000. Part of the proceeds would be donated to the Palliative Care Centre of the Miri Hospital while the rest would be forwarded to the World Vision Malaysia Children’s Development Fund.

Meanwhile, Lai commended the beauties and their collaborators for organising the camp.
