EAST Malaysia beauties dominated the Miss Malaysia Model of the World national beauty pageant, taking home the top three titles.
Marie Bibiana Baxter from Kota Kinabalu was crowned Miss Malaysia Model beating 17 other contestants while Edwina Yong from Miri, Sarawak, was adjudged the first runner-up and Rachel Alessandra Bridger from Tawau, Sabah, was chosen as the second runner-up.
The 22-year-old Kadazan beauty Marie received RM4,000 as the prize.
She will represent Malaysia at the 22nd Anniversary of Miss Model of the World international pageant in China from Nov 2 to 22, this year.
Standing 179cm tall, Marie also won three other subsidiary titles — Miss Model Cover Look, Miss Model Friendship and Miss Model Cosmopolitan.
Recounting her roots after being crowned by last year’s winner Madelyne Nandu who is also a Sabahan, Marie said her grandfather was of British - Kadazan descent.
“I have little time to rehearse as I have to finish my projects before coming here for the contest,” said Marie who is a final year student in interior designing at the Sabah Institute of Art.
Edwina, 22, who is pursuing her double-degree in accounting and finance at the Curtin University branch campus in Miri, said she did Sarawak proud by being chosen as the first runner-up.
Rachel, 22, who is of British-Manadao and Kadazan parentage, said this was her second achievement in a beauty contest as she was the Miss Sabah Tourism 2005 when she was only 17.
The three from East Malaysia travelled together to take part in the contest, said Rachel who is now pursuing a make-up course at A Cut Above Academy in Subang, Selangor.
Edwina and Rachel also received the prize money of RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.
In the pageant held at the Syuen Hotel Ballroom last Sunday, the contestants appeared for the catwalk in fashion-wear, swim-wear and evening gowns before a panel of judges.
A week before the finale, the contestants who represented the various states in the country, visited places of interest, tasted local food and did charity work at children’s welfare homes.
Miss Malaysia Model is organised by the Star Avenue Production.
