KOTA KINABALU: Her parents’ effort in teaching her and her siblings to love and protect the environment since she was a child inspired May Salitah Naru Kiob to take part in the inaugural Miss Earth Sabah 2010. And not surprisingly, the bubbly 22-year-old Bachelor of International Affairs Management final year student from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), went on to win the hearts of judges and become the first Miss Earth Sabah.
“Through this competition, I learned a lot of new things, especially to keep the environment clean,” May said.
“I never expected to win this first Miss Earth Sabah title as all the competitors were doing very well during this competition.
“I made new friends during this competition and learn how to take care of the environment through cleaning up the river in Kampung Babagon, tree planting and beach clean-up at Taman Awam in Likas and visit to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park,” she said.
May said she would make extra effort to create awareness and educate the people to take greater care of the environment.
The former student of St. Francis Convent High School and SM La Salle said the level of cleanliness in the city has to be raised further.
She said the ‘no plastic bags on Monday’ campaign is a good approach to raise environment awareness as it involves the public at large.
May was earlier also named Miss Photogenic, Miss Volvo-Drive-E and Miss Audience Favourite.
Meanwhile, Miss Earth Malaysia 2009 Madelyne Nandu, who was the organising director of Miss Earth Sabah 2010,  said it was really a successful event.
“Through the first short period of organising the competition, it was really successful which was full with the activities.
“We had received a lot of good feedback from the people and we managed to create awareness and taking more care about the environment,” she said.
Madelyne  said the Miss Earth Sabah crown features different colors representing different elements and combination of water, fire and earth.
She said the Miss Earth Malaysia 2010 will be held on July 8-18 in Ipoh, Perak.
“The ambassadors for Sabah to represent the state at the national level could be the top three or only the winner because we are still waiting for the national organiser to decide how many representatives from the states,” she said.
Meanwhile, Appey Rowenna Januin, 19, from Papar was the first runner-up in the Miss Earth Sabah and was also named Miss Eco-Logic.
The second runner-up was Queennera Francine Francis Kitingon, 18, from Kota Kinabalu. She was also named Miss Earth-Water, Miss Natural Beauty Groom 2Life and Miss Facebook Favourite.
Placed fourth was Pachara Apin Emmanuel, 19, from Penampang, who was also named Miss Earth-Fire and Miss Talent.
The other subsidiary titles’ winners were Miss Congeniality Lydia Anthony Lijua and Miss Eco-Brainy Fiona Anthony Lijua.
The grand final of Miss Earth Sabah was officiated by Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun.
