Miss World 1956 dies at the age of 74.



It is with great sadness we announce the death of Petra Schurmann, who won Miss World in 1956. It is very sad, particularly as she was expected to attend our 60th Anniversary in October in Vietnam.

We send our condolences and love to her family and loved ones.

After a series of Miss Worlds still in their teens, in 1956 Petra Schurmann, at the age of 23, became the fifth ever Miss World, and to this day, is the only winner from Germany. A student of philosophy and history of the arts, Petra returned to her studies after winning the title before moving into a career in television.

Over the years since winning Miss World, Petra worked on more than 1000 television programmes in Germany as a presenter, moderator and talk-show guest. By the time she retired to the shores of Lake Starnberg, south of Munich, Petra Schürmann had also written several books and worked as an actor. She died on January 13th 2010.
