SIBU: It is hoped that the participants of the Miss Tourism Pageant 2007 will become ambassadors for Sibu in line with effort of putting Sibu on the world tourism map.
The Guest of Honour, Member of Parliament for Lanang, Datuk Tiong Thai King pointed out that with the knowledge and experiences they had of Sibu, they can help to further promote Sibu in particular, and Sarawak in general.
Tiong said this during a ‘Welcoming Reception’ for contestants of the Miss Tourism Pageant 2007’ at Kingwood Hotel here last Saturday night.
The Miss Tourism Pageant 2007 is organised by the Sibu Development Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism.
The Franchise Founder and Owner of Miss Tourism Pageant 2007 is Alaric’s Productions Company.
Tiong said set in the heart of Borneo Island, Sibu is the gateway to the centre of the State of Sarawak or better known as the Land of Hornbills.
“Sibu is a modern, vibrant and progressive town which still maintains its uniquely culture and traditions. “With 26 different ethnic groups, Sarawak boasts of having the richest ethnic and cultural diversity in Malaysia,” he said.
Tiong also pointed out that, that was why Sibu has envisioned to become a ‘City of Culture and Festivals’ as the leaders are work in close rapport with the people to fully realise the vision.
“This is in fact the very first time that an international beauty pageant is organised in Sibu and we are proud and honoured to be the host for this prestigious event,” he said, adding that  apart from winning the prestigious title, the event also gave the people of Sibu the chance to extend its goodwill and friendship  to the participants from over 30 nations.
Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government who is also Member of Parliament for Sibu, Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew was among those present.
