I guess because when I was competing in China, I was physically harassed by our sponsors. My buttocks were felt, then other girls’ breasts were grabbed! Of course, the press did not reveal this because in my contract (with BPCI) it’s not allowed,” tells Maggie. She adds, “They were Chinese sponsors from one of the largest company. One of the sponsors humiliated me, Oh, I really slapped the one that touched me inappropriately. I said, ‘Don’t touch me!’ I went like that to him.” At that time the Miss World pageant was not yet over but Maggie didn’t care.
“Oh my God, I’d rather have my dignity, right? I’d rather have my dignity than consent to humiliation just for me to win, right? When I called Stella, she told me to finish (the competition). She didn’t do anything about it. I wanted to leave, I didn’t want to compete, she just said to ‘Just finish it, you have to finish it’” I said to myself… you know I can’t do anything about it. I felt (let down) because she didn’t do anything to help me. So I got turned off. I finished it (the pageant), but since that incident I didn’t want to win,” explains Maggie.
Why? “That was the reason… The Miss World Organization didn’t do anything about the incident.” Was she not the only candidate that experienced that? “No 80 percent of the girls were inappropriately groped or humiliated!” says Maggie. “When we arrived, it was 10 p.m. Then the sponsors were drunk. Then they had two girls per table (all men). I said, ‘I am not a prostitute, I am a beauty queen, I am an ambassadress of my country. This is not how you should perceive me as.’ Afterwards, I was turned off of being a beauty queen. Like, ‘You know what, if I have to sell myself to these people, no to beauty pageants.”
What did the Chinese (sponsor) do when you slapped him? “Nothing, I surprised him. Then I spoke to him in English but he didn’t understand me. But he saw my sash, Philippines,” says, Maggie.
