PASSERS-BY along Jalan Tun Sambathan, Brickfields, stopped to enjoy a fashion show at the Mumbai store recently.
The show, hosted by Maya’s Fashion Sdn Bhd, was modelled by the finalists of the Miss Calendar Girl 2010. It featured sarees by designers Vishal and Vipul as well as fusion costumes.
According Maya Silk Group director Ajay Ubrani, sarees are their core selling point, and despite expanding their trade to other areas, they have never neglected their core business.
Eye-catching: The finalists showing off some of the clothes by Maya’s“We have salwar kameez with Pathiala pants that originated from Punjab and Ludhiana. We also have the fusion collection which is a blend of modern clothes with traditional tops,” he added.
The fusion costumes are all the rage in India especially after actresses paired leggings with Kurti tops in recent Bollywood movies.
Maya features chiffon materials that are currently in trend since it is lighter and has a slimming effect. Most of the costumes were decorated with sequins and stones, making it an ideal outfit for a special occasion.
The colours were vibrant hues of gold, pink, black, red, green and blue.
“Malaysian women prefer vibrant colours. We send the range of colours to the designers who will design the clothes according to our colour scheme,” added Ajay.

Long-time customer, Farah Awan, 48, said she shops regularly at Maya’s because they always have something different.
As part of their pre-pageant events, the finalists presented the costumes in three different rounds and finally introduced themselves to the crowd of spectators.
The Miss Calender 2010 is being held for the third, the first time since 2006 and 2007. All 12 finalists will be featured in the calendar for the year 2011.
This year, all the models are from various countries including Iran, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Germany, France and Indonesia.

“There is no swimsuit category and we are focusing more on the cultural aspects of Malaysia,” added the organiser, Nasim Khanam from Nash Model’s Agency
Meanwhile, the winner of the pageant will represent Malaysia in the international pageant set to take place in Bahamas in November.
“This show was held to train our models. All of them have been put through a series of programmes including speech, confidence, motivation and more,” said Nasim.
She also said the programmes were held to ensure the models have both beauty and brains.
The Grand Finals will be held on July 24 at the the Palace, Sheraton Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
