CLAIMING the coveted crown in her maiden pageant attempt, Sherlyn Seo proved that first time’s a charm.
At only 17, the SMK Haji Zainul Abidin student was the youngest contestant of the Miss Chinese Campus Malaysia 2010 Penang state finals, but nevertheless showed grace, elegance and nerves of steel that belied her youthfulness.
Mentally shutting out the crowds of people and dozens of camera flashes, she confidently strutted her stuff on stage, parading in evening wear and casual wear, while also clutching an eco-bag.
An exuberant dance and song performance in the talent segment ensued and she was later declared winner, receiving the crown from last year’s champion, Grace Choong.
“The pageant seemed interesting, so I decided to give it a go. To win in my first try was quite a surprise, and I’m very happy,” the demure lass said, adding that she practised her song for an entire week.
Finishing runner-up was TAR College accounting student Melinda Lee, 19. She opted for a magic show to showcase her talents, performing several tricks that she gleaned from a friend.
She diligently practised for a month, at times skipping sleep at night to work on her routine, which included suspending a piece of twisted paper in mid air, setting fire to it and emerging with a rose.
“I had generous support from my parents and friends, so it made me feel comfortable on stage. This was a good opportunity for me to improve and I tried my best,” Lee said.
In the final podium place was image artist Belle Pang, 21, another first-timer who also performed a musical routine. She made a lot of new friends along the way and given their close resemblance, likens Seo to a sister.
“I was quite nervous earlier, and was also surprised to be in the top three. But anyhow, friendship is more important than the competition,” added Pang, who also bagged the Miss Checki-licious (Photogenic) subsidiary title.
Besides trophies and tiaras, Seo, Lee and Pang also took home prizes worth RM1,000, RM800 and RM500 respectively from the pageant, jointly presented by Jokerztrick Production and Yeah Magazine.
The winning trio will also represent the state in the Miss Chinese Campus Malaysia 2010 Grand Final at Marine Island, Pangkor on Oct 16, where prizes worth RM30,000 await the winner.
They will be joined by other top three winners from the pageant’s upcoming stops in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Johor later this month and July.
The other subsidiary title winners from the Penang leg were Wendy Tan (Miss Go-Green and Miss Perfect Skin) and N’drea Lim (Miss SilkyHair), both 21.
