Miri to host Miss Sarawak Model of the World 2010.

FIRST, it was an international beauty contest. Now, Miri will be the focus of a modelling and fashion extravaganza.

The city will host the Miss Sarawak Model of the World 2010, a top-class fashion and modelling contest that will be a prelude to a national and international contest later this year.

Mayor Lawrence Lai said the event to be held at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Resort from July 25 to 31 was expected to draw national and international attention to Miri.

“This is the first time that Miri is hosting such a prestigious event.

“Modelling and fashion are industries that attract a lot of attention from the young and fashionable. Miri is a young cosmopolitan city and we can turn this event into a platform to host more renowned events in the future,” he told a news conference in Miri yesterday.

Miri-based event management company The Room Production will organise the event.

The company’s general manager Melissa Wong said the event was aimed at unearthing Sarawakian talents in modelling and fashion.

It is open to all Malaysians residing in Sarawak and more than RM20,000 worth of gifts and cash prizes are up for grabs.

She said the modelling and fashion industries were not just about physical beauty but also about intelligence, adding: “The winners will be judged not by their looks alone, but also their personality, knowledge, confidence on the cat walk and how they handle themselves in front of a big crowd.”

Wong, who was Miss Elite Malaysia 2008 and the runner-up in the Miss Malaysia Model of the World 2009, said the winner would represent Sarawak at the Miss Malaysia Model of the World 2010 in Ipoh later this year.

The winner at national level will then represent Malaysia at the Miss Model of the World 2010 expected to be held in China.

Wong said that part of the proceeds from the event would be donated to various charitable organisations.

Miri, which will celebrate its 5th anniversary as a city on May 20, will also host the Miss Tourism Intercontinental on that day. This beauty contest is among the top-five beauty pageants in the world.
